Under Attack by Jenny Lu

Jenny Lu is an international artist. Born in Taiwan, she currently lives and works in London. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, Japan, China and Taiwan. She has a MA Fine Art from Central St Martins (2000-2001) and recently completed a PhD degree in Fine Art practice at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Her best known work includes the videos ‘…itching’, which won an award in the Beck’s Future Video and Film Prize in 2000 and ‘Take a Peep’, nominated for 101 International Image Award in 2003. Her controversial video installation ‘7 Basic Methods to Commit Suicide’ was shown at Nottingham’s ‘You Are Here’ (YAH) Festival in October 2003. An article about Jenny’s work, with the headline ‘Suicide as Art’ was a front page story in the Nottingham Evening Post. Solo exhibitions include: Ginza Art Laboratory in Tokyo, Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, Alsager Arts Centre and London Triangle Gallery in the UK.

In Jenny Lu’s work the home is no longer the place of normality, of safety. Her videos evoke the uncanny in our everyday life and leave the audience with a growing sense of unease. Images of ordinary, familiar situations are twisted to make normal activities seem askew and the viewer becomes aware of watching what maybe one should not see. Beneath the surface there is the certainty of being in the wrong place all the time, of wanting to escape but recognizing the impossibility of escaping from what is not outside but within us.
